Debate
At Inspire Gilbert, you can learn how to debate. There are two styles of debate offered in ASDA – Team Policy and Lincoln-Douglas. We will choose as a group which style to pursue at the beginning of the school year. As the club grows, we may have both team policy and Lincoln-Douglas training simultaneously.
Team Policy is a 2 on 2 debate in which the affirmative team puts forth a plan/policy to amend something called for by the resolution. The negative team then persuades the judge that the policy will not work. The two teams take turns using evidence while trying to persuade the judge either to accept or reject the proposed plan.
Lincoln-Douglas debate is a one on one debate style in which each team proposes a value to the judge in response to the resolution. Each debater is trying to persuade the judge that their proposed value should be considered the highest value in the debate. Lincoln-Douglas debate is more philosophical in nature.
Debate is only offered in our in-person club option on Tuesday afternoons.
